Bedok View Secondary School in collaboration with NParks Skyrise Greenery Incentive Scheme has embarked on a greenroof@BedokViewSecSch that provides students with hands-on, practical education in organic agriculture and creates a medium to explore positive environmental, economic, and social change. And in addition, the proceeds from the sales of our harvests are ploughed into school’s Needy Pupils’ Fund in providing students under MOE Financial Assistance Scheme with lunch subsidy. Presently there are three avenues for student, academic, and community interaction.
Service Learning Club students are involved in all aspects of the greenroof – from farm maintenance to harvesting crops. School markets its produce to staff, canteen vendors, and community at large. School also uses different models of farming such as permaculture and biodynamic to fix the chemistry in soil nutrients.
Fundamental to our greenroof@BedokViewSecSch is to increase student awareness of healthy, local, and organically grown foods. They also get to see how what they have learned inside and outside the classroom relates to real-world problem – and might possibly lead to a career.
